The protestors, driven by a shared concern for the planet’s future, gathered at the 1000 block of West Street, advocating for bold and decisive leadership in the face of the escalating climate crisis. While some heeded police requests to disperse, a core group remained steadfast, resulting in charges of second-degree criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.

At the heart of the protest was the call for President Biden to recognize the gravity of the climate emergency—a plea led by Aru Shiney-Ajay, executive director of the Sunrise Movement. This youth-led organization is at the forefront of the push for a Green New Deal, aiming to transition the United States away from fossil fuels towards sustainable, union-supported green jobs. Shiney-Ajay emphasized the critical nature of the crisis, stating, “The climate crisis is at our doorsteps. We’re seeing the climate crisis get worse every year, and it’s time for him to use the full force of the U.S. government to declare an emergency, create millions of good union jobs, and end the era of fossil fuels.”

The protesters’ message is clear: meaningful action against Climate change is non-negotiable. As the November elections approach, the younger generation is watching closely, ready to Support leaders who demonstrate a real commitment to safeguarding the environment. With Climate change impacts becoming more evident with each passing year, the time for President Biden to act is now.
