Doug Maw, a passionate nature advocate, found himself in a legal battle after freeing a young deer and a hare ensnared in traps led to his arrest. The incident, which occurred nearly a year ago in Sussex, sparked controversy when Maw faced nine charges, including criminal damage and theft, for his intervention.
The arrest stemmed from footage Maw posted online, showcasing the distressing plight of animals caught in snares intended for wildlife. His actions, hailed as heroic by animal lovers, resulted in the liberation of the fawn and hare, both of which scampered away to safety. However, instead of commendation, Maw found himself at odds with the law.
Maw adamantly asserts that the charges against him were unfounded, citing discrepancies in the evidence presented by the prosecution. He maintains that certain clips used as evidence were unrelated to his activities and even depicted scenes far removed from Sussex, where the incidents occurred. His exoneration in Lewes Crown Court comes as a testament to the lack of substantiated evidence against him, although the ordeal is not yet over as a non-conviction restraining order looms.
“It’s crazy – the use of snares is barbaric,” Maw expressed, reflecting on his legal battle. He argues that the imperative to alleviate animal suffering supersedes any damage caused to the snares, echoing sentiments shared by many wildlife conservationists. Maw’s advocacy extends beyond activism; it represents a fervent commitment to protecting vulnerable wildlife from inhumane practices.
His case sheds light on the broader issue of wildlife protection and the ethical dilemmas surrounding Conservation efforts. Professor Stephen Harris, whose research contributed to snare bans in Wales and soon Scotland, underscores the urgency for legislative action to address such practices.
Under the Protection of Wild Mammals Act, Maw’s actions of freeing distressed wildlife align with legal and moral imperatives to protect animal welfare. He emphasizes that gamekeepers should release non-target species caught inadvertently, fostering a culture of empathy and responsibility towards wildlife.
Despite his vindication, Maw’s journey has been full of challenges and intimidation tactics from certain factions. Incidents of harassment, including the despicable act of leaving dog poop on his doorstep, underscore the hostility faced by advocates challenging entrenched interests in the countryside. In response to inquiries, Sussex Police reiterated their commitment to investigating reported crimes while emphasizing adherence to due process and proportionate action.
