In unity for climate justice, millions around the world are raising their voices to demand an end to the era of fossil fuels. These protests, supported by Amnesty International, represent a global call to action to address the urgent issue of Climate change and prevent further environmental catastrophe. Starting with the Fridays for Future Global Climate Strike, these coordinated events are set to take place in various countries over the coming days. The culmination of this movement will be the March to End Fossil Fuels on September 17, 2023 in New York, coinciding with the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week and the Secretary-General’s Climate Ambition Summit on September 20.
Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary General, reiterated the organization’s stance on the matter, emphasizing the need for a rapid and equitable transition away from fossil fuels. Callamard called for an immediate halt to new fossil fuel development, asserting that “too many leaders in positions of power today are doing too little to avert this disaster, and even reneging on existing promises.”
Amnesty International’s core demands are as follows:
At the forefront of these global climate protests is the Fridays for Future movement, which originated in 2018 when Greta Thunberg began her solitary climate protest outside the Swedish parliament. Since then, the movement has grown exponentially, with Amnesty Sweden Director Anna Johansson participating in the Climate Strike and supporting a Week of Action. In recognition of their unwavering commitment to human rights and climate activism, Greta Thunberg and Fridays for Future received Amnesty International’s prestigious Ambassador of Conscience Award in 2019.
The urgency of addressing Climate change cannot be overstated. The 2015 Paris Agreement set the goal of limiting Global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels to mitigate the most severe consequences of Climate change. However, current projections suggest that this target is at risk of being significantly exceeded, with potentially catastrophic consequences for the planet.
As these global protests unfold, governments and corporations are called upon to heed the urgent demands for action. To secure a healthy environment for all, a swift and equitable transition to renewable energy sources is essential, along with ending energy poverty and closing the chapter on the fossil fuel era. Only through collective and immediate action can we hope to mitigate the impending climate catastrophe and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
