Salt has been long revered as the foundation of civilization, being known as the most valuable commodity on earth, for both its inherit health benefits and its ability to preserve food. Salt played such an integral role in the development of the modern world, that most civilizations, beginning at the Bronze Age, created Salt Roads just for its very transportation. Then why has salt taken on such a demonic connotation, making it to almost every “Foods to Eliminate” list put out in the past couple decades?
The answer is that salt is completely misunderstood and completely misrepresented. The salt that you know of today as “Table Salt,” is not the salt that has been historically known. Much like everything else sold today, table salt is completely refined, processed and unnatural, and should not even be able to be labeled as “salt.” It is therefore, this refined table salt that should be labeled as harmful, not the actual TRUE salt that is both essential and healing to every human and animal form.
Then What is Table Salt if it’s not TRUE Salt?
Table salt is 97%-99% sodium chloride, and mostly devoid of any natural mineral content. It is typically heated over 1,000 °F, which damages the molecular structure of the minerals and causes stress in the human body. Table salt also contains anti-clumping agents, some which include aluminum, fluoride, and even chlorine (for bleaching), which have been shown to be quite toxic to our bodies. Finally, table salt is ground using a nickel screen, which leaves heavy metal residues that interrupt normal functioning in the body.
After undergoing processing, table salt can no longer blend or combine with human body fluid, which invariably undermines the most basic chemical and metabolic processes in the body. It prevents the free crossing of liquids and minerals, thereby causing fluids to accumulate and stagnate in the joints, lymphatic ducts and lymph nodes, and kidneys. Therefore, table salt can lead to a host of health problems including high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, edema, gout, dehydration and kidney failure. This is not your TRUE salt.
TRUE salt is unheated, air-dried sea salt, which contains over 90 trace minerals and contains no flowing or anti-clumping agents. It has not been ground with a nickel plate and has not been bleached. Therefore, you will find it is often grey or pink in color. TRUE salt is mined from unpolluted, pristine ancient seabeds, and is composed of tiny mineral-rich crystals formed millions of years before pollution contaminated our present oceans.
Why is TRUE Salt so Important, Even Essential, to Health?
Without adequate TRUE salt, the body will not function properly, leading to a host of symptoms and even diseases. Replacing table salt with TRUE salt is one of the easiest ways to improve health and is so often overlooked. With adequate water (half your weight in ounces of water daily), TRUE salt can benefit you in the following ways:
- Essential for Digestion- salt aids in HCL (hydrochloric acid) production in the stomach, needed for digestion, normal Bowel Movements and Acid Reflux Prevention
- Stabilizes Irregular Heartbeat and Regulates Blood Pressure
- Creates an Alkaline Environment- pushes excess acidity from cells
- Needed for the Absorption of Nutrients through the Intestinal Tract
- Helps Balance Blood Sugar Levels
- Needed for Nerve Transmission
- Essential for Normal Fluid Balance- Prevents Edema, Excess Water Weight
- Clears Mucus and Phlegm- especially in sinuses
- Prevents Muscle Cramps and Twitching
- Makes Bones Strong– 27% of the body’s salt content is in bone
- Essential for Kidney Health– helps prevents gout, kidney stones and kidney failure
- Plays a Role in Sleep Regulation
- Keeps the Body Hydrated- Clear, Glowing, Soft Skin
- Prevents Chapped Lips
- Aids in Prevention of Rashes, Eczema, Psoriasis
- Plays a Role in Spider and Varicose Vein Prevention
- Essential for Adrenal Health- Aids in Normal Inflammation Response, Stress Relief, Antihistamine
- Often Aids in Asthma Relief, especially in Children
- Combats Parasitic Infection in Animals
- Combats Pinworms
How do I Use TRUE Salt?
I recommend using 1/2 tsp of TRUE salt daily, either on your food or in your water or juice. I usually add about 1/8-1/4 tsp of salt in my water and juice daily and then use it on all my meals. TRUE salt actually contains a much cleaner taste and most everyone finds it to be way more pleasing than regular table salt. In fact, I did not even think I liked salt until I switched to TRUE salt.
Where can I Find TRUE Salt?
While there are many brands of sea salts in health food markets, many of them still use nickel grinders or source their salt from less-than-pristine sources. Therefore, I always purchase Premier Research Lab’s Pink Salt or Sunfire Pristine Salt, because I have spoken to their manufacturers and know without a doubt that they are the best. If you currently have a salt, such as Celtic or Himalaya, I would urge you to contact the company directly to ask about their manufacturing process and salt sources to make sure you are getting the best. Remember that salt can be detrimental to your health if it is not up to TRUE salt standards, so it is always best to be informed.
TRUE salt is essential to everyone’s health even if you have high blood pressure but I would start very slowly. I would only use a pinch of salt a day and slowly work up to the 1/2 tsp over a period of a month or so. Please be mindful of your blood pressure daily and always consult with your doctor.
Including TRUE salt into your diet is one of the most basic ways to improve your health instantly. This is your foundation, as important as drinking purified water and eating your fruits and vegetables, and should not be overlooked. Switching from Table Salt to TRUE salt is one of the first steps I always make with my clients, and has been undoubtedly, one of the most successful. So get started today, and honestly, I am asking you to eat salt… could be worse!!

Your entire article is based on disinformation or made up facts. I couldn’t tell if I was reading an article from a sea salt manufacturer’s website or if I was reading The Onion. Please research from reliable sources and inform yourself before spreading this type of disinformation that can have serious health consequences for your readers. If you must use the internet as a source, only use information from trusted medical/health institutions. If you enter “sea salt vs table salt” into a Google search, the first article that appears is this from a Mayo Clinic nutritionist:
Sea salt and table salt have the same sodium chloride (NaCl) content. They both will raise blood pressure. You shouldn’t encourage adding either to food, as most Americans already ingest an excessive amount of salt.
If you want to understand how salt raises blood pressure, consult a physiology book from your local library. It may take weeks or months to understand, but you need to understand the physiology of sodium in the body before pretending to know about the subject.
I found this website via Twitter because I’m a vegan (12+ years), animal and nature lover, but I am also a 2nd year medical student. I assure you that any doctor, med student, or anybody that has taken a medical physiology course would have a similar reaction to your article.
Lesley, it’s a shame the medical establishment that you are training for is filling you full of such ignorance. It’s good to read outside of the medical establishment once in a while.
Some Types of Salt Are More Dangerous.
When you add salt to your diet, the type matters greatly. Today’s table salt has practically nothing in common with natural salt. One is health damaging, and the other is healing. Natural salt is 84 percent sodium chloride, and processed salt is 98 percent. So, what comprises the rest?
The remaining 16 percent of natural salt consists of other naturally occurring minerals, including trace minerals like silicon, phosphorous and vanadium. But the remaining two percent of processed salt is comprised of man-made chemicals, such as moisture absorbents, and a little added iodine.
You might be tempted to think “salt is salt,” but even the structure of processed salt has been radically altered in the refining process. Refined salt is dried above 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, and this excessive heat alone alters the natural chemical structure of the salt. What remains after ordinary table salt is chemically “cleaned” is sodium chloride.
The processed salt is not pure sodium chloride but is only 97.5 percent sodium chloride and anticaking and flow agents are added to compromise about 2.5 percent. These are dangerous chemicals like ferrocyanide and aluminosilicate.
More than 80 percent of the salt most people consume is from processed foods. The salt added to these convenience foods is bleached out, trace mineral deficient and mostly sodium—as opposed to natural salt, which is much lower in sodium.
If you want your body to function properly, you need a pure, unrefined rock salt such a Real Salt, True Salt, or Himalayan crystal salt.
Lesley… I would not rely on the Mayo Clinic for ANYTHING!
Great article, Lauren. Very informative. I have been using Himalaya salt for quite a few years now. I believe there are from a true source as they have exhibitions annually where you can chat to the staff. They also make tea light holders which I use daily.
