A study revealed that people in the US have been experiencing a rise in blood pressure since the pandemic started, primarily in women.
The study that showed the rise in blood pressure was done by analyzing 464,585 employees and their spouses or partners from several different companies. These companies participated in the study, starting in 2018 until 2020.
The data revealed an obvious jump in blood pressure once the pandemic started, but it also revealed a mystery. The rise in blood pressure was found more in women than in men, though no one knows why for certain.
Dr. Luke Laffin, co-director of the Center for Blood Pressure Disorders at Cleveland Clinic, said,
“We did see more pronounced increases in blood pressure in women. Now, we don’t know the exact reason for that. However, we do know, and there’s data to suggest that the pandemic has tended to place more of an outsized burden on women, particularly women that work, and this is an employer-sponsored wellness program.”
Research showed that diet was not the main component in this blood pressure spike amongst women, though poor dietary choices could have impacted it to an extent.
This is something that women should clearly keep an eye on, as high blood pressure can lead to many health risks, including heart disease and stroke. These risks are the two leading causes of death in the US, so it’s important to keep an eye on your blood pressure.
