Under the creative direction of Sabato De Sarno, Gucci unveiled its spring/summer 2024 collection, which not only reinterprets the brand’s timeless codes but also brings them into the modern era. The release of the Horsebit 1955 bag, crafted from Demetra, represents a significant milestone in Gucci’s sustainability journey. This new material is a vegan alternative to traditional leather, addressing the environmental concerns associated with animal leather’s substantial carbon footprint.
Gucci’s Horsebit 1955 bag collection introduces two distinctive designs, one in classic black and another featuring their iconic monogram pattern. What sets these bags apart is their unique composition, combining Demetra with certified hemp and Econyl’s recycled nylon.
Billie Eilish, an advocate for environmental causes, was chosen as the face of Gucci’s new campaign and became the first person to flaunt the Demetra-made Horsebit 1955 bag. Eilish expressed her honor in being a part of Gucci’s evolution towards reimagining traditional luxury. She remarked, “It’s a new understanding, and one that isn’t afraid to evolve in a new direction, that truly matters to me.”
Demetra, developed in-house by Gucci, is a game-changer in the world of sustainable materials. Comprising 75% plant-based components, it incorporates responsibly sourced viscose, wood pulp, and non-GMO corn-based plastic. This composition results in a lower environmental impact concerning climate change and water usage. Gucci is actively researching methods to increase the percentage of bio-based inputs in Demetra without compromising durability.
One of the distinguishing features of Demetra, as emphasized by Gucci, is its scalability. While some other new-gen materials have faced challenges due to funding or the complexity of production, Demetra utilizes widely available inputs and an existing tanning process. This streamlines the production process and makes it more sustainable, which sets it apart from other emerging materials in the industry.
