We have known about the dangers of microplastics for over a decade. Scientists and environmental activists have been warning us about the tiny chemical contaminants, but there is still little to no government regulation regarding the plastics. Now, a new study found microplastics in human breastmilk. Microplastics have even been found in the placentas of pregnant women. This means that from the moment of conception, we are unable to escape this terrifying single-use plastic.

The recent study found microplastics in 75 percent of participants’ breast milk, all of whom were otherwise healthy. The study also found no correlation between food and drink consumption in plastic containers, which means that even if we try to stay away from single-use plastics, there is no way we will be able to avoid them.
Microplastics have been found everywhere, from Mount Everest to the depths of the oceans. It’s more important now than ever to move away from single-use plastic. Not only is it horrible for the environment, but now studies like this are revealing how devastating they can be for humans. Through food, the air, and other ways, we are constantly consuming tiny plastic particles.
Luckily, there is legislation known as the Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015, but we need further legislation that targets the sources of this microplastic Pollution.
“If members of Congress care as much about children as they claim to in all of their anti-abortion ads, they must step up to protect children from the grave risks of chemical pollution,” the petition reads.
