New Year celebrations across Europe still put people animals and wildlife at risk. In the Netherlands uncontrolled public fireworks have caused fires severe injuries and death. In response the Dutch Parliament voted to ban the public sale and use of most fireworks from New Year’s Eve 2026. This decision followed shocking harm including 1,239 serious injuries in one year some to children as young as five. Around 12 people reportedly lost a hand. In Rotterdam at least 14 people suffered eye injuries and two required surgery. Two people died including a teenage boy. A historic Amsterdam church roof also caught fire allegedly linked to fireworks.
Fireworks also terrify pets wildlife and people with PTSD. Animals panic flee abandon nests or die from shock. Safer official displays exist. Europe must follow the Dutch lead. Sign the petition now. Sign the petition now to protect lives the environment and animals.
