Blockchain technology has certainly received its fair share of criticism for its high energy use for mining and transactions. However, many innovative people are attempting to remedy that problem, such as switching transactions from proof of work to proof of stake. On top of that, many people are attempting to leverage this relatively new technology to create positive change in the world.
One example of this is NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, that are used to generate money for various creative projects and social causes. The extreme popularity of these tokens makes it possible for massive amounts of money to be generated for people in need. Below are just some of many examples where that has already occurred.

Jack Butcher, the founder of Visualize Value, created “CARE Package for Afghanistan” NFTs, which raised more than $200,000 to help give emergency aid to families in Afghanistan who had to flee their homes in the face of conflict. Each of the NFTs covered the emergency needs of one family for a month. The money was donated to CARE, which helps people worldwide, especially women and girls in need.

Last year, on National Suicide Prevention Day, Trippy Bunny Tribe, an NFT project which boasts psychedelic art featuring bunnies, raised over $220,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. This flagship drop sold out of all 1,111 bunnies in less than a minute through the Giving Block, a cryptocurrency donation platform.

On International Friendship Day last year, Coca-Cola released four NFTS which raised around $575K for Special Olympics International. The NFTs included: A vintage Coca-Cola cooler that contains the other three NFTs, a futuristic-looking Bubble Jacket, a Sound Visualizer which animates a coke being opened and enjoyed, and a Friendship Card inspired by their original trading card in the 1990s. The winning bidder received a vintage Coca-Cola refrigerator filled with Cokes.
A Dutch artist in the Art Blocks Community created a series of regenerative artwork and sent $3.5 million of its profits to Doctors Without Borders in Australia. It is thought to be the largest NFT-related donation at the time. The Artists on Art Blocks community has helped Donate over $26 million to various charities.

Women Rise was created by Maliha Abidi and is a series of 10,000 randomly generated art pieces showing women from around the world in spacesuits, various backgrounds, scarves, accessories, and so on. All the art pieces have sold and 10% of the proceeds will be donated to various organizations which Support gender equality and the education of girls. Women Rise also hopes to empower women and girls to join the tech space.

The ‘i love boobies!” NFT campaign has donated over $15,000 to the Keep a Breast Foundation to Support BIPOC women breast cancer survivors and those with a breast cancer diagnosis. The NFT is a revolving bracelet with the words “i love boobies!” on it. The donations are used to Support a BIPOC population who are disproportionately impacted by breast cancer.

Blazed cats are computer-generated NFTs of hand-drawn cats and their various accessories, characteristics, backgrounds, and other custom features. So far, they have donated over $300,000 to Mental Health America generated from the buying and selling of the NFTs. The project was built in less than a day and became highly successful right away, as they were able to over $215K within its first two weeks.

Fast Food Punks recently released an honorary set of 26 hand-drawn NFTS showing various people and animals donning a McDonald’s hat to raise over $574K for the Ronald McDonald House Charity. According to their website, that “will provide an estimated 6,000 overnight stays for families in need.” The Fast Food Punks is a collection of 1000 NFT punks inspired by fast food.

Moon Landing was created to help foster a more neurodiverse NFT community. They work with nonprofits and artists with various mental disabilities by explaining the process of creating NFTs, acquiring cryptocurrency, and lending their Support for the NFT designs. Their first collection, called NFToons, was created in collaboration with Project Onward.

David Bianchi created the award-winning spoken word film I Can’t Breathe to raise awareness for the struggles that people of color face in America. Little did he know that he would eventually turn it into an NFT and raise over $10,000 for the George Floyd Memorial Foundation. Bianchi also believes this is a golden opportunity to show minority communities the value of these new technologies.
