French startup Neoplants is designing genetically modified houseplants that can be used as air purifiers to absorb air pollutants in your home.
Neoplants are designed to target specific indoor pollutants that can’t typically be captured by conventional air purifiers. While most air purifiers take particles out of the air, these Neoplants are designed to tackle volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene. These pollutants can come from the outside, from appliances, and also from materials in the house.
Tech Crunch reported that Neoplants have modified the DNA of houseplants to produce new enzymes that can metabolize air pollutants. It can turn formaldehyde into fructose, BTEX compounds into amino acids, and other things that can take the pollutants out of the air while also helping the plant.
“Our plant can capture the four main components that cause air Pollution at home. But it can also turn it into something useful as it can become plant matter,” co-founder and CEO Lionel Mora told Tech Crunch.
After four long years of research, Neoplants will be available for preorder during the first quarter of 2023, Tech Crunch reports. As for their next plans, Neoplants hopes to recreate the same process with other plant varieties and hopefully work on carbon capture and storage.
