In a bold move towards sustainable urban development, Siemens has initiated the groundbreaking project known as Siemensstadt Square in Berlin, Germany. This innovative project aims to house approximately 35,000 people and integrate cutting-edge technologies such as the Siemens Xcelerator’s digital twin technology and artificial intelligence.

Siemensstadt Square, sprawling over 188 acres with over a million square meters of floor space, represents a significant stride in urban development. The project is not only a testament to Siemens’ commitment to sustainability but also serves as a blueprint for future urban brownfield projects globally. Utilizing the entire range of Siemens Xcelerator platform technologies, the project is expected to create a district that is both livable and future-ready.
By 2035, Siemens plans to invest a substantial $800 million into developing Siemensstadt Square into a vibrant hub for partnerships, with the total project volume reaching up to $4.8 billion. This area will transform a century-old industrial site into a dynamic district combining manufacturing, research, living, and learning facilities.
A notable feature of Siemensstadt Square is its emphasis on sustainable living. The project will include Europe’s largest wastewater heat exchanger of its type to enable net-zero operations. Additionally, the district will provide living space for up to 7,000 people across 270,000 square meters, with 30% of the area dedicated to social housing.
Siemensstadt Square will also foster economic growth by potentially creating up to 20,000 jobs, thus contributing significantly to Berlin’s economy and helping the city meet its climate targets. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, present at the groundbreaking ceremony, remarked on the project’s potential to set a new standard in urban planning and modern neighborhood construction.
Roland Busch, President and CEO of Siemens AG, highlighted that Siemensstadt Square would leverage AI, digital twins, and other technologies to transform the industrial area into a model of sustainable growth and competitiveness. The project aims to integrate intelligent solutions at every level—from sustainable buildings with photovoltaic roofs to AI-optimized biodiversity monitoring and electric vehicle solutions.
As the cornerstone is laid, Siemensstadt Square is set to become not only a place of innovation and new beginnings but also a blueprint for the future of sustainable urban living.
