It was a breathtaking scene for one Florida teen and several others as a herd of 16 beautiful manatees swam near the shore in the clear-green water. The 19-year-old caught the meet-and-greet on camera — what a treat this must have been to see so many friendly sea cows!
While this passing herd of majestic creatures appear to be free of any concern around the boaters, the reality is the Florida manatee is classified as an endangered species. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute recorded approximately 803 manatee deaths in 2013, most caused by hunting, poaching, and collisions with boats.
It’s important to spread the word about manatee awareness, even if you don’t live near a manatee habitat. Currently, there are only 4,000 to 5,000 manatees living off the Florida coast, but unfortunately, their numbers are dropping each year, which is keeping them on the endangered species list.
