Located in Mocksville, North Carolina, 22nd Century will utilize its NASCO manufacturing facility to produce these innovative filters. This initiative is not only a step forward in reducing nicotine harm but also a major leap in combating one of the most persistent forms of global Pollution. Cigarette butts, which are predominantly made from cellulose acetate, a type of plastic, are the most littered item worldwide. With around 6 trillion cigarette butts manufactured annually and 65% of them discarded improperly, they contribute significantly to environmental degradation.
Larry Firestone, CEO of 22nd Century, highlighted the dire need for alternatives, noting the long decomposition period of conventional butts, which can take decades to break down, releasing harmful chemicals into ecosystems, particularly aquatic ones. Greenbutts’ filters, however, are a game-changer. Made from completely natural materials, these filters are 100% biodegradable and disperse in water, leaving no toxic residue.
This new venture is expected to expand beyond 22nd Century’s reduced nicotine content cigarettes, which are the first and only combustible cigarettes to receive an FDA harm reduction authorization. The partnership could extend to other brands and products, leveraging Greenbutts’ innovative technology across the industry.
Greenbutts has been at the forefront of developing sustainable tobacco product technologies since 2010. Their filters are designed to disperse in water within minutes and degrade fully in compost in just days, unlike their traditional counterparts that linger in the environment for up to 15 years.
With this agreement, 22nd Century Group will provide essential manufacturing Support to Greenbutts as they pursue FDA approval for these eco-friendly filters. This collaborative effort not only represents a significant technological advancement but also aligns with global environmental goals and the increasing legislative focus on single-use plastics.
The introduction of such biodegradable filters is a promising step towards reducing the environmental impact of smoking, providing a cleaner, greener alternative that could potentially revolutionize the industry and significantly lessen worldwide pollution.
