New Delhi, the bustling capital of India, is currently facing a severe environmental crisis. The sacred Yamuna River, which flows through the city, has been enveloped by a thick layer of toxic foam, a stark indicator of the Pollution issues plaguing the region. This foam, a dangerous cocktail of sewage and industrial waste, has high levels of harmful substances like ammonia and phosphates, known to cause respiratory and skin ailments.

The arrival of this pungent foam coincides with an extreme smog event in New Delhi, creating a compounded health risk for its over 20 million inhabitants. The air quality has deteriorated to such an extent that primary schools have shut down, and many residents have resorted to air purifiers and masks for protection.
This isn’t an isolated incident, as a similar frothy mixture has been reported in Tamil Nadu to the south. Such occurrences highlight a longstanding battle with Pollution, with the Yamuna River suffering from decades of chemical dumping and untreated sewage discharge. Despite only 2% of the river passing through Delhi, the city contributes a staggering 76% of the river’s total Pollution.
The environmental impact is profound, affecting not only the river’s health but also the cultural practices of Hindu devotees, who perform rituals and celebrate festivals like Chhath Puja along its banks, even amidst the hazardous foam.
The crisis has drawn international attention, with New Delhi earning the unwelcome distinction of the world’s most polluted city, according to IQAir. With an air quality index (AQI) soaring to 517, the city’s atmosphere is categorized as hazardous, in stark contrast to cities like Oslo, which enjoys an AQI of just three.
India’s struggle with Pollution is evident, with two other major cities, Kolkata and Mumbai, featuring on the list of the world’s 20 most polluted cities. The situation in New Delhi serves as a clarion call for urgent action to address the environmental and public health emergency, calling for immediate and effective measures to safeguard the health of its residents and the sanctity of its rivers.
