India’s bustling cities, renowned for their cultural vibrancy and relentless heat, are unwittingly incubating an insidious threat – ozone Pollution. Rising temperatures and persistent air pollution have turned these urban areas into crucibles for this deadly, yet often ignored pollutant.

Among the world’s most polluted cities, Indian urban centers like New Delhi routinely experience suffocating smog. However, the majority of policy responses have largely targeted particulate matter Pollution – minute airborne particles harmful to human health. Now, scientists are sounding the alarm on an unseen menace: surface ozone, a harmful pollutant borne from a deadly cocktail of nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds under the harsh influence of heat and sunlight.
Frighteningly, surface ozone doesn’t originate from any single source but emerges as a dangerous byproduct where Pollution meets climate change. Even short-term exposure can have catastrophic health impacts. A 2022 study estimated that ozone was responsible for over 400,000 deaths worldwide in 2019, an increase of 46% since 2000. India has seen the sharpest rise in ozone-related deaths in the past decade.
Surface ozone wreaks havoc on the respiratory system, aggravating conditions like asthma and increasing susceptibility to infections. Long-term exposure has been linked to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and a heightened risk of death from cardiovascular or respiratory ailments.
The situation is aggravated during summer heat waves, which are becoming increasingly common due to Climate change. Alarmingly, recent data reveals that ozone levels in Delhi and surrounding areas have exceeded safe limits on 87 days in a span of just three months.
Addressing this looming crisis isn’t straightforward. Controlling ozone levels requires a delicate balancing act as it’s intricately linked with other air pollutants. Moreover, the insidious nature of ozone Pollution often causes it to spike in cleaner, green neighborhoods, where pollutant reactions that normally break down ozone are less likely to occur.
Addressing ozone Pollution will require innovative policies, greater public awareness, and a commitment to mitigating emissions. As the country faces an aging and growing population alongside escalating heat waves, the need to tackle this hidden menace becomes more urgent than ever. For now, the silent killer continues to loom over India, threatening the health of its people and the vibrancy of its cities.
