One of India’s most sacred rivers is covered in a thick layer of toxic foam, posing a severe risk to those who entered the waters in honor of the festival of Chhath Puja.
Hundreds of Hindu devotees dip into the polluted waters each year to celebrate this important festival. This year, they exposed themselves to the toxic foam that is believed to be caused by pollutant discharge coming from nearby industries.
Over the years, the water has become dirtier and dirtier from sewage, Pollution, and chemicals. Despite these serious concerns, the ritual bathing continues every year as a part of the tradition. Authorities tried to push the foam away from the bathers, creating bamboo barriers, but nothing could completely remove the threat.
This river is also the main supplier of Delhi’s water supply, posing a severe risk to the health of others who did not partake in the festival.
The sacred river poses a strange sight as the foam is so thick and high that it looks like snowdrifts floating on the water. But as beautiful and strange a sight as it might be, it poses a serious threat to all exposed.
