As conversations around Climate change evolve, incorporating terms like global warming, climate crisis, and global weirding, the quest to make this global phenomenon relatable has taken a new turn. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a groundbreaking tool that shifts focus from the abstract to the immediately tangible: the number of “outdoor days” we might lose or gain due to Climate change.

This innovative approach offers a glimpse into the future, predicting how our local weather patterns could change by the end of the century if carbon emissions continue to rise unchecked. Depending on your location, the forecast varies dramatically. Residents of California, France, and Germany can expect a slight increase in hospitable outdoor weather, gaining up to a month of additional outdoor days. The United Kingdom stands to benefit even more, with a projected increase of 40 outdoor days.
However, not all news is positive. Areas like New York, Massachusetts, China, and Japan are predicted to lose a significant amount of outdoor time, with some regions facing more than a week’s worth of reduced access to outdoor activities. Illinois and Texas are facing an even harsher reality, with losses exceeding a month of outdoor time by the 2080s due to intensifying summer heat.
The most severe impacts, however, are expected in countries with vulnerable populations. Nigeria and India, for example, are on track to lose nearly two and two and a half months of outdoor days, respectively, due to hotter, longer summers.
There is a silver lining. If global efforts manage to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, the losses could be significantly mitigated, with Nigeria and India reducing their lost outdoor days to just one month. This emphasizes the potential for positive change through concerted global action.
The MIT tool is part of a broader field known as climate scenario analysis, which utilizes advanced computational models to predict how Climate change could affect various regions. This has given rise to a burgeoning industry of startups like Jupiter Intelligence, Cervest, and One Concern, which are harnessing this predictive power to offer tailored climate risk assessments to investors, insurers, and other stakeholders.
As climate change continues to weave its way into every facet of our lives, the demand for such predictive insights is only set to grow. This not only opens new avenues for startups in the climate forecasting space but also highlights the increasing relevance of climate scenario analysis in our daily decision-making. Whether for planning outdoor events or managing agricultural risks, understanding the potential impact of Climate change is becoming an essential tool in our collective effort to adapt and mitigate its effects.
