A sculpture of a roasted pig is under fire from some animal activists and Romans after it it was unveiled in Rome recently, the New York Times reported. The artwork was meant to evoke the city’s history and culture.
A series of installations included a roasted pig, a delicacy called porchetta. Within a few hours of its unveiling, the statue was vandalized and covered in red paint. Activists picketed and attached signs that read “Animals are not sandwiches,” and “Your traditions, their suffering.” They also hung a banner with slogans including “Animals are our brothers.”
Activists don’t see the installation as evocative of art or culture in the city. “I see nothing artistic in the death of an animal, put on exhibit,” said Rita Corboli, the Rome representative of the Italian branch of the International Organization for Animal Protection in the Times. “We absolutely want it to be removed.”
