Carson Williams is a high school junior who has dedicated 3 years to raising and training a guide dog for the blind.

Guide Dogs for the Blind had a program in place in Williams’s school. And he got involved when he was in 8th grade because he had never been able to raise a puppy before.

To qualify, he had to attend four months of guide dog training, attend other dog graduations, and read a book on the subject. After all of that, he was finally able to pick up his own guide puppy to train.

Out of the 3-year commitment, Williams only had to train his puppy, Chili, for a year and a half. Giving him the basic puppy training as well as grooming him to become a good seeing-eye dog.

It took a lot of dedication and time to get Chili to where he needed to be to go to his 10-week preparation in order to become an approved seeing-eye dog. If he passes, he will become a seeing-eye companion for 2 to 8 years before retiring.

There is also a chance that Chili might be returned to Williams after retiring.

This is a very long process that requires plenty of commitment from an adult, let alone a teenager.

Williams’s parents are very proud of his hard work, but he does not think that he will participate in the program again. As he wants to be able to keep the next puppy that he raises.

Somewhere out there, someone will be very well taken care of by Chili and will be able to lead a better life because of Williams’s hard work.
