Guiding Eyes for the Blind is a seeing-eye dog program that provides dogs for the visually impaired. Recently, the program decided to branch out to provide seeing-eye dogs for vision-impaired runners.

The dogs are trained to help their guardian go out and run like anyone else can by guiding them and preventing them from any danger or accident. All of the dogs are trained for two years so that they are well qualified to keep their runners safe at all times.

Jolene Hollister, from Guiding Eyes for the Blind, said, “They’re just not going out for a run and following their person around the park. They are still taking into account branches down, potholes, curbs. Anything that could cause a safety problem.”

The Guiding Eyes for the Blind program has even started its own fundraiser called the Wag-A-Thon, where people can run a marathon with their seeing-eye dog to raise funds for the program. This fundraiser is especially important as Guiding Eyes for the Blind provides seeing eye dogs free of charge to anyone who is severely vision impaired.

This is a wonderful program that gives those with vision impairment the chance to get out and run safely while being guided by a fully trained guide dog.
