Sea Lion Returned to Ocean After Being Rescued From Busy Freeway

Swimming sea lion

Earlier this month, on a busy freeway in Southern California, drivers were stunned when they saw a sea lion was weaving through traffic. Civilians stopped and helped contain the cute critter until SeaWorld’s Rescue Team arrived, rescued him from the median, and took him to their rehabilitation center.

Last week, SeaWorld released a statement saying,

“After a full month of rehabilitation, SeaWorld’s Rescue Team, in collaboration with veterinarians and NOAA, decided the sea lion was ready and approved to go back to his rightful home and was successfully returned to the ocean yesterday morning,”

The 200-pound marine mammal was released back to the Pacific ocean with two others.

According to a study, California’s sea lion population has tripled over the last 40 years, and officials are trying to balance the mammals’ needs with the booming California tourism. As a result, they have closed some popular tourist areas.

However, this is not the first time this particular sea lion has ended up in strange places. Within the last three months, he has been rescued three times.

It’s fair to say this might not be the last news we see about this adventurous sea lion!

Despite SeaWorld’s rescue of this sea lion, we can’t forget the horrible things that the company has done to animals in their care. The amusement park is built on the exploitation of intelligent marine animals for profit. The torment, imprisonment, and unnatural breeding of their animals need to end. These animals should not be in captivity to begin with.
