When natural disasters occur, heroes step up and help humankind. With the heroes, you can always find the incredible dogs who worked hard to help save lives. Frida, a yellow Labrador retriever is one of those dogs. She was a search and rescue dog in the Haiti earthquake aftermath in 2010, the Ecuador earthquake in 2016, and Mexico earthquake in 2017.
These were devastating disasters with many deaths, but heroes like Frida are the reason many survived. During the Mexico earthquake, she was credited with finding over 40 people, and saving 12 lives! In July of last year, Mexico even commemorated a statue of Frida and her caretaker, with a placard calling them “memorable symbols of strength.”
During the earthquake, Frida became famous and was hailed as a hero by people all over the world. Now, Frida’s retired after about 10 years of hard work. During a very sweet ceremony, her work gear was replaced with a stuffed toy symbolizing her transition from a hardworking hero to a dog who can now relax and enjoy retirement!
Her retirement was part of the navy’s International Day of the Rescuer. Deputy Naval Minister Eduardo Redondo said, “Frida stole the heart of all Mexico and thousands more abroad… Her bark always gave hope, and in moments of pain and uncertainty she brought relief. Frida, mission accomplished, with honor.”
Thank you, Frida and all other heroes, humans and dogs alike, who save lives and give us hope in hard times.
