Firefighters are being credited with saving a curious cow that got stuck inside a concrete box in the Inland Empire.
Cal Fire responded to a call of a large animal rescue in Yucaipa. When crews arrived, to their surprise, they discovered Mikey, a 500-pound calf that was trapped inside a small concrete culvert box.

Thankfully, Rancho Cucamonga Fire Department’s technical rescue team offered their help, along with Cal Fire mechanics and a local towing company. With their combined effort, they were able to lower to rig a large hoist to remove the scared and stuck calf out from inside the box and return him to safety.
Although the Cal Fire team discovered some minor cuts and scrapes on Mikey, they determined that overall he should recover perfectly fine. The team mentioned that they could tell that Mikey was relieved to be free and back on his feet. However, everyone is still in shock at how the curious calf got stuck in the culvert, to begin with.
Although it’s very rare, If you happen to find a cow wandering in public areas or near a roadside, take note of where you are and report it to the police or local animal sanctuary. It can be very scary for these animals to be in such a loud and unfamiliar environment, so it’s important to act fast to help get them to safety as soon as possible.
