If there is ever going to be a story that will encourage you to adopt instead of shop for a dog, we hope that it is this one.

Mopsy is a beautiful five-year-old girl who was being cared for in a shelter partner of Second Chance Rescue NYC Dogs. She was a greeter for the other dogs who constantly keep arriving. Mopsy is lovable, affectionate, and great with the other animals in the shelter. What has happened to Mopsy is not her fault, or the shelter’s, which so desperately tries to care for these animals.

The shelter is a maximum 400-capacity rescue for homeless dogs and those whose irresponsible owners have abandoned them. But despite this, they are currently caring for more than 700 dogs. More and more are arriving every single day; how can anyone be so cruel?

Mopsy was attacked in her run by other dogs, and again, we must emphasize, this is due to over-crowding, and nothing else. These dogs come into the shelter in terrible conditions, are abandoned, or are just plain scared because the families they love have given up on them.

In cramped conditions with no clue what is happening to them, is it any wonder these dogs end up lashing out?

After the attack, Mopsy was covered from head to toe in puncture wounds. She had emergency surgery, was bleeding out, in terrible shock, and her blood pressure plummeted. Here she is during that vital surgery.

Mopsy is being cared for at Blue Pearl, where the team is still unsure if she will make a full recovery. She is still in a very critical condition, heavily sedated and on painkillers, with little interest in anything. Mopsy is even refusing food.

Mopsy so desperately needs a loving forever home. This poor girl was brought into this shelter already overbred and in a terrible state, yet was a friendly face for hundreds of other scared dogs coming through the shelter doors. Mopsy is a shelter favorite beloved by all the volunteers at the shelter. This should not be the end of her story. Mopsy deserves a life of love.

This shelter is not the only one to be overcrowded, and it is only a matter of time before we hear of another frenzied attack like the one Mopsy has just suffered. 6.5 million pets enter shelters each year across America. Irresponsible owners who give up on their pets when they are no longer convenient for their lifestyles are amongst the worst kind of people there are. This is why it is so vital that we adopt animals into our families instead of buying them. Dogs like Mopsy need us to show them the care they have missed out on.

Second Chance Rescue NYC fights hard to reduce animal overpopulation in shelters, rescue and rehabilitate critically injured and neglected animals, and connect the community to services that enable animals to remain in their homes. Please, consider adopting a dog like Mopsy, or making a donation so that they can continue their hard work.
