Chaos at Russian Circus Where Distressed Elephants Fall Outside of the Ring

Two elephants got into a serious fight that caused spectators to flee at a Russian circus recently, the Daily Mail reported. Elephant trainers tried to assist but the fight got serious.

According to the outlet, a female elephant named Jenny butted another elephant named Magda and knocked her to the ground. Jenny then tried to trample Magda while she was down during a circus in Kazan, Russia.

In the video, Jenny knocks Magda out of the ring and puts her close to the crowds in the stands. Circus director Ramil Sharifullin told Realnoe Vremya that “no-one was hurt.”

But spectators were worried. One parent of a young girl shared, “There was panic. It was close to us. We rushed to get out. So did everyone else especially in the front rows of the audience.”

The circus refunded the money and said the situation was under control. “Thanks to the well-coordinated work of all the circus services, the unexpected situation ended happily,” the circus said, “Jenny and Magda are currently calm, well-fed and in good physical shape… we sincerely apologise for what happened.”

Animal activists criticized the situation and circuses themselves. Activist Elvira Tikhonova said, “Animals go crazy in cramped cages. They suffer, and then they are forced to perform for the amusement of the public. It’s monstrous to make wild animals dance a waltz or ride a motorcycle. And they do not hesitate to beat them.”

Animals in circuses often receive terrible treatment. Their living conditions are appalling and the methods used to train them are often inhumane. In inhumane conditions, circus animals often become erratic or aggressive. The animals are unable to live their lives naturally, unable to act upon their instincts or behave as they would in the wild. Their physical and mental health also suffer, especially from depression and zoochosis.
