NBCUniversal is set to celebrate Pride Month with the release of a nature documentary that explores the diversity of animal sexuality. Titled “Queer Planet,” the series will debut on June 6 on NBCUniversal’s streaming service, Peacock.
“Queer Planet” takes viewers on a journey, looking into the rich variety of sexual behaviors and gender expressions in the animal kingdom. From pansexual primates to sex-changing clownfish, the documentary showcases extraordinary creatures. The series aims to challenge traditional concepts of what is considered natural regarding sex and gender, presenting insights from a range of scientific experts.
Hosted by actor Andrew Rannells, the documentary sheds light on the presence of queer behaviors across species, emphasizing that nature itself defies the binary notion of just two sexes. In the trailer, Rannells humorously points out that the natural world is filled with queer surprises, suggesting that perhaps humans should embrace a more open and accepting view of sexuality.
“We’ve all heard of gay penguins, but this film really opened my eyes to the full spectrum of LGBTQ+ behaviors across the natural world,” Rannells shared in a press release. He expressed his enthusiasm for being part of the series, especially during Pride Month and on Peacock, which he playfully dubbed the most “colorful and glamorous of all streaming services”.
The documentary features commentary from several scientists, including Dr. Amy Parish, Dr. Christine Wilkinson, Bradley Trevor Greive, and Dr. Martin Stervander. These experts provide valuable insights into the diverse and fascinating sexual behaviors observed in animals, reinforcing the idea that being true to oneself is a fundamental aspect of nature.
