A fire broke out early in the morning at the No Dogs Left Behind shelter in Canton, New York, leading to the loss of dozens of dogs. The Canton Fire Department, alerted by a passerby who noticed flames, responded to the scene shortly after 1 a.m., accompanied by additional emergency personnel.

When firefighters arrived, they encountered intense flames consuming the shelter’s kennel building. Dramatic photos shared by the department showed a structure completely engulfed by flames and dense smoke filling the area. Tragically, the shelter later confirmed on social media that none of the dogs survived the fire. “Each dog was a member of our family,” the shelter shared. “Tragically, they are victims once again. We have no words to express our grief.”

At the time of the incident, over 40 dogs were in the shelter, a home for many animals rescued from difficult situations. Fortunately, no civilians or firefighters were injured. While overnight staff were present on the property, they were asleep when the fire started, according to the shelter’s statement.

The fire’s origin remains under investigation as authorities work to uncover the cause of this tragic event. Canton, located near the Canadian border, is a close-knit community of about 7,000 residents, now mourning the loss of its local shelter’s animals.
