Road 2 Refuge animal sanctuary received an urgent, last-minute rescue call from a farmer with a sheep in labor who had prolapsed.

“We see this a lot, unfortunately, it was not your “usual” uterine prolapse. This momma had prolapsed her rectum. This is an extremely grave prognosis for so many reasons. Over a FOOT of her rectal tissue had been out and exposed to the world for several hours and was extremely devitalized. The farmer elected humane euthanasia,” said the rescue.

Although they did everything they could to try to save the mom, sadly, it just wasn’t possible. However, the farmer decided to at least give her babies a chance and surrendered the critical premature bottle babies to the rescue. She had two babies, a little boy, and a girl, but sadly only one survived.

“The boy had some structural congenital issues that we think caused his lungs to not completely develop,” said the rescue.

The little girl named Prim, although very weak and a few days premature, was tube-fed throughout the night and seems “interested in her surroundings,” the rescue added.

When Prim was born, she didn’t have any use of her legs but is slowly improving more every day.

“This little baby is a FIGHTER. She has not given up on us yet. Yesterday afternoon she stood up on her own!!” said the rescue. Usually, within an hour of birth, lambs are up nursing on mom, the rescue explained. However, since her mom had severe complications while giving birth, this was not possible.

Prim was faced with challenges from the day she was born but seems very excited about her new life at the sanctuary!
