The Orangutan Project has issued a heartfelt appeal for assistance in constructing a specialized Baby House to accommodate a surge in orphaned orangutans in dire need of care. In the past six months, The Orangutan Project has witnessed a significant increase in the number of orphaned orangutans rescued from deforested regions, illegal wildlife trade, and other threats.
“Orphaned orangutans face unique challenges that require specialized attention and care. With the loss of their mothers, these vulnerable infants require nurturing, companionship, and guidance crucial for their development,” said Leif Cocks, founder of The Orangutan Project.
The Baby House, to be built at the Bornean Orangutan Rescue Alliance (BORA) Rescue & Rehabilitation Centre in Berau, East Kalimantan, marks a pivotal step in efforts to protect these Critically Endangered great apes. This purpose-built sanctuary will provide a nurturing environment where orphaned orangutans can receive the essential care needed during their early years.
A team of highly trained, compassionate babysitters will staff the Baby House, offering personalized care to each orangutan. These caregivers will focus on fostering socialization, cognitive development, and emotional well-being, mimicking the natural familial bonds found in the wild.
Designed with the infants’ welfare in mind, the Baby House will feature advanced facilities, including an activity center to promote natural behaviors, nesting pods, and climbing poles to help develop nest-building skills, and a baby care room for regular medical check-ups. These amenities will ensure the highest standards of care and comfort for the young orangutans.
To bring this vision to life, The Orangutan Project is calling on the public’s generosity. Donations of any size are welcome and will directly Support the construction and operation of the Baby House. Every contribution will make a tangible difference in the lives of these orphaned orangutans. As a token of appreciation, The Orangutan Project will honor donors who contribute $1,000 or more with a special recognition on an honor board prominently displayed in the Baby House.
