Tonia Haddix, a former nurse from Missouri, has become a controversial figure in the world of exotic animal “ownership”, particularly for her deep attachment to chimpanzees. Her story, now the subject of the 2024 HBO documentary Chimp Crazy, sheds light on her tumultuous journey as an exotic animal owner, focusing heavily on her relationship with a Hollywood chimpanzee named Tonka.
Haddix, who has had various exotic animals, is best known for her role as the caretaker of seven chimpanzees, which she took over from the Missouri Primate Foundation in the late 2010s. Among these chimpanzees was Tonka, a retired actor famous for his roles in the 1997 films Buddy and George of the Jungle. Haddix’s deep bond with Tonka led her into legal battles with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and run-ins with law enforcement.
In a bid to keep Tonka, Haddix went as far as falsely claiming his death in 2021, leading to a complex legal drama. Despite her efforts to hide Tonka, PETA eventually discovered the chimpanzee living in Haddix’s basement in 2022. The case resulted in Haddix being ordered to pay substantial legal fees, and Tonka was relocated to a sanctuary in Florida, where he now lives under professional care.
Haddix’s story, as portrayed in Chimp Crazy, reveals the intense emotional connection she developed with her primates, particularly Tonka, and the lengths she was willing to go to keep him by her side. Despite the legal consequences and public scrutiny, Haddix continues to manage them near her home in Sunrise Beach, Missouri.
