Chimpanzees, our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom, have always fascinated us humans with their intelligence and tool-using abilities. These primates, sharing over 98% of our DNA, display a sophisticated understanding of their environment, often employing tools to accomplish various tasks. From cracking nuts to fishing for termites, chimpanzees exhibit a diverse range of tool-using behaviors that shed light on the evolution of cognition and problem-solving in primates. Exploring the intricacies of chimp tool use not only shows us the complexity of their social and cognitive lives but also offers insights into our own evolution!

The western Chimpanzee has been seen using a stone to crack open nuts. The video above, recorded in Sierra Leone in March 2020, shows the behavior in full force as a chimp takes a rock and slams it against a nut to bust it open!

2. Termite Twig

Chimpanzees are highly intelligent! In some cases, they use twigs to fish termites out of their nest for a little snack. You can see as the chimpanzee hunts for the perfect twig, places it down into the termite nest, and brings the bugs out to eat.

3. Termite Brush

Growing on the idea of using a twig to scoop up delicious termites and ants, these chimpanzees created a brush. To do this, they break twigs and turn them into a new kind of tool. This amazing marvel reveals that humans aren’t the only ones who try to make their ideas and tools better.

Kanzi, a bonobo chimpanzee, not only uses stones as tools but makes them. He smacks stones together to make the perfect tool to open a box with a banana.

5. A Bonobo Fire

Kanzi, also shown in the video above, has pushed the boundaries of tool use even further. He has learned to gather the materials to build a fire, put the fire together, light it, and even toast up some tasty marshmallows.

The study of chimpanzee tool use offers a cool glimpse into the fascinating world of primate intelligence and behavior. As we look at these creatures, we can understand ourselves better while marveling at their amazing abilities.
