Shelter Dog’s Heartbreaking Wait for a Home After BFF Gets Adopted

Misty, a sweet dog at the Community Animal Rescue Effort (CARE) in Skokie, Illinois, has faced the heartache of seeing her best friend, Peachy, adopted while she remains in the shelter. Misty was brought to CARE from a rural Missouri rescue a couple of months ago, hoping for a better chance at adoption. Despite this, she continues to wait for her forever home.

The shelter environment can be overwhelming for dogs like Misty, and volunteers have noticed the toll it takes on her. “Shelters are crowded and noisy which often causes animals to become very stressed,” a volunteer shared. Studies confirm that shelter life triggers stress responses in dogs, affecting both their behavior and health.

Though Misty has spent time in temporary foster homes, where she noticeably relaxes, she still has not found a permanent family. The bond she shared with Peachy, formed through play sessions at the shelter, was a bright spot during her stay. Sadly, after Peachy was adopted, Misty was left alone again. A recent TikTok video from CARE highlighted her loneliness, with the shelter expressing concern that Misty “is losing hope.”

With over 10,000 views and 2,400 likes, the video has drawn attention to Misty’s situation, and many are hoping she will soon find the loving home she deserves.
