A Calgary highway witnessed a tragic scene last Tuesday when a semi-trailer carrying nearly 100 cows overturned on the ramp from eastbound Stoney Trail S.E. to southbound Macleod Trail. The accident, occurring around 8:10 p.m., resulted in the death of 17 cows, and the driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Authorities have noted that speed is being considered as a possible cause of the crash, which left the cattle liner on its side after failing to navigate a curve on the ramp.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, including city police, firefighters, RCMP, and highway crews, while a veterinarian and cattle wranglers worked to manage the cattle. Amid the chaos, three cows managed to escape the overturned vehicle, leading to a nearly two-hour effort to bring them safely under control. Acting Inspector Scott Neilson from District 8 commended the quick and coordinated response, emphasizing that multi-agency teamwork was essential to secure the safety of both the animals and the public. “The swift response of all involved was crucial in managing this complex call, and we are grateful for the Support and professionalism demonstrated by everyone on the scene,” he said.
Nearby driver Taras Vasylyshyn, who witnessed and recorded the incident with his dashcam, described the shocking scene as the truck failed to handle the curve. “It was a loud screeching sound,” Vasylyshyn recalled, followed by the sight of the trailer tipping over, scattering debris across the roadway. After witnessing the accident, he immediately pulled over to check on the driver, who signaled he was unharmed. “It’s such a surreal situation, you don’t see this every day at all,” he said.
Police have confirmed that neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected in the incident. Investigations into the role of speed and other factors continue as authorities work to fully understand the cause of the accident.
