In a historic moment for France, the country’s first translocation of dung beetles has occurred in the Étang de Cousseau nature reserve near Bordeaux. About 60 dung beetles were released into the marshy forests, an area they once called home, to restore a vital ecosystem function on the Atlantic coast.

These little “ball rolling” insects will feast on the waste produced by the wild cattle inhabiting the rewilding project’s dunes, moors, and marshes. Dung beetles play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by recycling nutrients into the soil.
Dung beetle populations declined significantly in the region due to intensive farming and anti-parasite treatments given to cattle. This decline led to the disappearance of dung beetles from the area in the 1960s. However, with the reintroduction of wild cattle and a focus on sustainable land management, dung beetles have returned.
The Étang de Cousseau reserve is home to more than 5,000 species of dung beetles found on every continent except Antarctica. These insects are considered keystone species due to their essential roles in decomposition and seed dispersal.
This reintroduction project, funded by Rewilding Europe’s European wildlife comeback fund, demonstrates the importance of reestablishing wildlife at every level of the ecosystem. Though large mammals often dominate reintroduction efforts, the success of the entire ecosystem depends on the presence of plants and smaller wildlife, like dung beetles.
The reserve is also an important feeding site for migratory birds, providing a habitat for diverse species, including spoonbills, lapwings, and frogs.
