Iain Jenkins, a raccoon rescuer, has turned his ordinary home into a sanctuary for creatures big and small – and they changed his life for the better. His journey from difficult mental health struggles to becoming a home for displaced animals is a testament to both animal and self-compassion.
Two decades ago, Jenkins found himself in the middle of a debilitating nervous breakdown. Paralyzed by despair, he sought comfort in the presence of animals, as they had helped him throughout his life. Recognizing the connection he shared with these creatures, Jenkins embarked on a journey that transformed his life and the animals.
Abandoning a successful career in education and social care, Jenkins founded Raccoon Rescue UK, a nonprofit organization committed to rescuing and rehabilitating exotic animals. His dedication to this cause has not only saved countless lives but has also provided him with a renewed sense of purpose.
Jenkins’ home now serves as a haven for a diverse array of animals, each with its own unique story of rescue and redemption. Four raccoons, a grey African parrot, and a friendly skunk live with him, fostering a harmonious coexistence between man and beast. Among them, Jenkins shares his house with Scout, Nicky, Rubbish, and Katana, each a testament to his unwavering commitment to their well-being.
Despite the challenges that come with caring for such unconventional creatures, Jenkins embraces their quirks. Beyond his role as a rescuer, Jenkins is a staunch advocate for destigmatizing mental health issues. He believes that open dialogue and acceptance are paramount in fostering a supportive community for those struggling with psychological distress. Just as physical ailments warrant attention and care, Jenkins asserts that mental well-being should be afforded the same level of consideration and compassion.
Now, he is leading the charge of a rescue mission, spearheading efforts to locate Meeko, a fugitive raccoon on the loose in Sunderland!
