Discarded fishing lines and reckless human activity are putting dolphins in danger. These highly intelligent, social animals are being maimed, entangled, and even killed because of carelessly abandoned gear. In Korea, animal advocates are calling for stronger protections—granting dolphins legal personhood. This would give them the legal right to safety, allowing conservationists to sue on their behalf when corporations or individuals put them at risk.
Dolphins are already listed as “near threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, meaning they are sliding closer toward extinction. Legal personhood could make a critical difference, ensuring that Pollution, fishing waste, and tourist activity no longer go unchallenged. Dolphins have their own unique names, call each other, and show deep social bonds—yet humans too often leave them scarred and suffering.
