France banned the captivity of whales, dolphins, and porpoises in 2021, marking a major step forward for marine animal welfare. Yet two captive killer whales remain trapped despite the law. Wikie and her son Keijo are still confined at Marineland Antibes in southeastern France. The park closed in January 2025, but the animals were never relocated. Advocates warn that the situation highlights the urgent need for action. Sign the petition now and call on French authorities to finally move these orcas to a proper sanctuary.
Wikie and Keijo are Icelandic orcas born in captivity and bred for entertainment. For years they performed in front of loud crowds in marine shows. Now they remain inside deteriorating pools at the abandoned facility. Reports submitted to French courts say the whales often simply float or “log” when staff are not present, a troubling sign of stress.
The park still holds 12 bottlenose dolphins as well. Experts say disagreements between organizations have delayed a sanctuary solution. Meanwhile the animals remain confined in barren tanks instead of the open ocean environment they evolved to inhabit.
France already recognized the harm of captivity when it passed its ban. Now it must finish the job. Sign the petition now and demand a safe sanctuary for Wikie and Keijo. Sign the petition now before more time is lost.
