Oregon’s wildlife is in trouble, and House Bill 4134 offers a rare fix everyone can live with. The bill would raise the statewide lodging tax by 1.25% and generate an estimated $38 million a year to restore habitat, reduce poaching, tackle invasive species, address wildfire damage, and compensate ranchers for wolf related livestock losses. A coalition including Oregon Wild, the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association, the Oregon Hunters Association, and the Oregon Farm Bureau is backing it.
Right now, most Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife funding comes from hunting and fishing licences, leaving non game species underfunded. Oregon’s at risk species list has grown from 294 to 321 in a decade, and reptiles have declined by 40% statewide. About 63% of the new revenue would be paid by out of state hotel visitors.
