Launched at the end of May, BARK Air is the world’s first airline designed with dogs as the primary passengers and their human companions as secondary. The airline, a subsidiary of BARK—the company behind popular dog-centric brands like BarkBox—aims to offer a “white paw experience,” a luxurious journey for dogs. From booking to landing, dogs are treated like VIPs, enjoying pampering akin to the white-glove service in human first-class travel.
BARK Air’s inaugural flight took off carrying six dogs and 11 humans from New York to Los Angeles. The dogs, ranging from Chihuahuas to a Golden Retriever, were indulged with chicken-flavored puppuccinos, special cupcakes, and even a shoe on a platter to snack on. According to BARK Chief of Staff Katharine Enos, the flight was smooth, with dogs napping or playing.
The airline is the brainchild of Matt Meeker, BARK’s co-founder and CEO. Inspired by his late Great Dane, Hugo, who often had to travel in the cargo hold due to his size, Meeker wanted to create a more comfortable and dignified travel experience for dogs. BARK Air flights are pricey, costing $6,000 for a one-way trip between New York and LA for one dog and one human, and $8,000 for flights to London. Despite the high costs, Meeker believes prices will decrease as the demand and efficiency increase.
Partnering with Talon Air, BARK Air uses a Gulfstream V jet that accommodates 14 human passengers but is capped at 10 for extra space. The flight experience includes a “pup intake” to understand each dog’s temperament and preferences. Upon arrival at the terminal, humans bypass busy commercial airports and TSA, walking straight onto the plane with their dogs. Onboard, dogs enjoy spa treatments, pheromone-covered blankets, and meals served before takeoff to prevent territorial disputes. The crew is trained in dog CPR and fear-free behavioral practices. While there are no size or breed restrictions, human passengers must be over 18.
Meeker hopes BARK Air will soon offer more affordable and accessible flights. Plans include longer commitments with the charter company and potentially leasing or buying planes to reduce costs. The ultimate dream involves a custom-designed Boeing 747 with private cabins, a central dog park, and a social bar for humans.
The initial response to BARK Air has been overwhelmingly positive, with high demand for upcoming flights and numerous requests for new destinations. The airline is expanding routes, including a New York to Paris trip in the fall, and is actively planning to meet the needs of diverse travelers and their furry companions.
