A Missouri man, Seth Vaile, 30, has been arrested in connection with the tragic deaths of eight puppies left in a sealed plastic tote outside the Joplin Humane Society. Vaile now faces eight counts of misdemeanor animal abuse, according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred on Sunday, September 8, when a plastic tote containing the puppies was discovered around 10 a.m. It had been left in a partially hidden spot—between bushes and halfway on the sidewalk, exposed to direct sunlight. Sadly, a veterinarian later confirmed that the five-week-old puppies had succumbed to heat exhaustion.
Derek Walrod, Chief Deputy of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, expressed his sorrow over the preventable tragedy. “It was very sad,” he said. “I don’t know why they would do it when the shelter was closed. It definitely could have been avoided.”
Authorities were able to identify Vaile through surveillance footage and tips from the public, who responded to the shelter’s social media plea. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office stated that anonymous calls from concerned citizens played a key role in the investigation. Additionally, another individual, Samuel Allen, 36, was taken into custody for unrelated outstanding warrants and remains a person of interest in the case.
