Man Adopts “Saddest” Cat in the Shelter

After losing his beloved cat, Andrew McCarthy sought solace in a new feline companion that resonated with his grief. He shared his journey on Reddit, capturing the hearts of many with his post featuring his newly adopted cat, Gregory, who initially appeared just as sad as he felt.

McCarthy, an astrophotographer based in Arizona, adopted Gregory from the Pinal County Animal Shelter. While playful kittens vied for attention, Gregory—previously named Boots—sat quietly at the back of his kennel, seemingly reflecting McCarthy’s own sorrow. “I’ve felt a void in my life ever since my cat passed, so I adopted the saddest cat at the shelter,” he explained.

Since bringing Gregory home, McCarthy has witnessed a remarkable transformation in his new friend. “When I took him home—the entire hour-plus drive his eyes remained sad, but he didn’t complain,” McCarthy noted. Now, Gregory has emerged as a playful and affectionate companion, helping to fill the emptiness left by McCarthy’s late cat.
