Harassed Seal Dies from Stress After Biting Woman in Cape Town

Officials in Cape Town, South Africa, are urging beachgoers to leave seals alone after a distressing incident that led to the death of one of these marine mammals. The unfortunate incident occurred on Strand Beach, a popular destination southeast of Cape Town, when a woman was bitten by a seal. The woman was promptly taken to a local hospital to treat the bite wound. The incident, however, was not just a random act of aggression from the seal, but a tragic consequence of days of repeated harassment.

Cape Town’s Deputy Mayor, Eddie Andrews, shed light on the distressing events leading up to the attack. He explained that the seal had been trying to do what was entirely normal in the animal kingdom: rest on the beach. Seals often come ashore for rest, and this behavior is part of their natural cycle.

Regrettably, some members of the public had different plans. Reports indicate that people at the beach harassed the seal in various ways, from throwing rocks at them and prodding them with sticks to even allowing dogs to attack them. All of this was done, inexcusably, for the sole purpose of capturing footage of the seal chasing them. This kind of behavior not only disturbs the peace of the animals but endangers their lives and the safety of beachgoers.

Tragically, the constant torment pushed the seal to the brink. Eventually, they lashed out and bit a woman who had been strolling on the beach, unaware of the animal’s presence due to poor visibility. After the attack, the beach was partially closed as an animal protection unit stepped in to assess the seal’s condition. The seal was later transported to a local aquarium for a health check. However, the stress the animal had endured proved to be fatal, and they ultimately succumbed to their injuries.

Cape Town’s Deputy Mayor, Eddie Andrews, emphasized that this incident is, sadly, a common outcome when seals are subjected to such stress and harassment. He implored all residents and beachgoers in Cape Town to let these animals live in peace and go about their natural behaviors without interference.
