It’s a heartwarming story of survival and love – meet Nikki, a German Shepherd with a unique connection to her favorite stuffed toy. In early May, a photo of Nikki clutching her plush companion amidst rain-soaked streets in Detroit began to circulate among animal rescue groups. The image sparked an outpouring of concern and a mission to save her was initiated.

Gail Montgomery, co-founder of Almost Home Animal Rescue League, was profoundly moved by Nikki’s plight. This heart-rending scene inspired her to reach out to her contacts at South Lyon Murphy Lost Animal Recovery. Thanks to their dedicated efforts, Nikki was eventually found and taken off the streets, her beloved stuffed toy still accompanying her.
Tragically, Nikki’s harsh life on the streets resulted from her owner’s demise. Surviving on the kindness of strangers and discarded scraps, the resilient pooch had been left to fend for herself for months. Her first veterinary check-up painted a heartbreaking picture – she was diagnosed with heartworm disease, had plastic bags, twigs, and bones lodged in her stomach, and was suffering from other health issues.
However, hope was not lost for Nikki. Almost Home, a foster-based, no-kill animal rescue league, stepped in to offer Nikki the care and safety she so desperately needed. Placed with a nurturing foster family, Nikki began her road to recovery.
Nikki’s foster parents provided her with a proper diet and a steady stream of love and care. This new regimen has worked wonders for Nikki, helping her bounce back both physically and emotionally.
Once fearful and clinging to her stuffed toy for comfort, Nikki is now revealing her affectionate and loving nature. Her foster parents are her new companions, and while she still sleeps with her toy, her dependency on it has significantly lessened. With her recent visit to the spa and the overwhelming love she receives from her new family, Nikki is indeed “living the life”.
