Happy Compromise Farm rescued 27 birds from a local property where their human was no longer able to provide care.

Unfortunately, due to the brutally cold winters of upstate NY, these birds had not all been kept in proper coops to keep them warm enough.

Amongst the rescued birds was a little rooster named Peggy Lou, who had the worst case of frostbite that the farm and their multiple avian vets had ever seen. Both of his feet were entirely frostbitten up to his ankles, leaving mummified remains on his feet.

Thankfully, despite his severe frostbite, Peggy Lou was only a few months old, tiny, and otherwise very healthy, which led to miraculous healing. He sleeps inside now and can currently get around on his own, but is at risk of pressure sores and bone infections without more padding. Peggy Lou’s determination and resilience are inspiring, and he deserves a shot at being more independent.
