FIFA Urged to Address Dog Slaughter Concerns in Morocco’s 2030 World Cup Bid

Millions of stray dogs in Morocco face a grim fate as the country prepares its bid to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Advocacy groups are raising alarms about Morocco’s controversial methods of population control, calling on FIFA to act decisively before finalizing the hosting agreement.

Animal welfare advocates claim that millions of stray dogs are being inhumanely killed in preparation for the games. Reports describe gruesome methods, including poisoning with strychnine and public killings, often in full view of children. Dr. Marc Abrahams, OBE, a veterinary campaigner, condemned these actions, stating: “This is not dogs being put to sleep in a humane way, this is dogs being tortured, beaten and subjected to horrific killing methods including being injected with strychnine. No vet would ever sanction or Support population control measures like this, it is downright cruel and FIFA needs to take responsibility for the role that football is playing in this.”

The International Animal Welfare Coalition has urged FIFA to require humane population control measures in Morocco as a condition of hosting. Advocates also argue this would safeguard public safety, especially children who are exposed to these acts.

Beyond animal rights, concerns extend to human rights issues in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain. Amnesty International has highlighted abuses, including excessive police force, restrictions on freedom of expression, and discriminatory practices in football. Morocco’s criminalization of same-sex relationships and extramarital affairs adds further scrutiny to its bid.

FIFA’s decision on the joint bid is expected on December 11. Advocates argue that this moment presents an opportunity for the organization to demonstrate its commitment to ethical standards, ensuring that both human and Animal rights are protected in the name of sport.
