Elephants, like humans, exhibit a distinct preference for how they use their bodies, particularly when it comes to their trunks. While humans are divided into right-handed and left-handed individuals, elephants show a similar tendency regarding which side of their trunk they favor. Recent research reveals that the way elephants use their trunks can be determined by examining the wrinkles on them.
Although elephants appear to have a nearly equal split in trunk preference, scientists have identified a method to discern an individual elephant’s inclination. The study indicates that an elephant who predominantly uses the left side of their trunk—termed a “left-trunker”—displays certain physical characteristics. Specifically, these elephants tend to have more pronounced wrinkles and longer whiskers on the left side of their trunk, while the right side shows signs of wear due to frequent ground contact. Dr. Michael Brecht, a co-author of the study from Humboldt University of Berlin, stated, “The whisker length difference is big and prominent. The wrinkle effect is more subtle, but still significant. It indicates that wrinkle patterns are at least partially use-dependent.”
This research, published in Royal Society Open Science, is one of the most thorough examinations of how trunk wrinkles develop over an elephant’s lifetime. The team analyzed both deceased elephants’ trunks and photographs of live ones, discovering a fascinating pattern: the distance between wrinkles decreases from the base of the trunk toward the tip.
When comparing Asian and African elephants, researchers found that Asian elephants tend to have a higher concentration of wrinkles on the upper side of their trunks. This distinction stems from the presence of more pronounced fold-like wrinkles. According to Brecht, these wrinkles likely enhance trunk flexibility, akin to how an accordion works. He further explained the functional differences between the two species: “African elephants have two finger-like structures on the tips of their trunks, which they use to grasp objects, whereas Asian elephants only have one. As a result, unlike African elephants, Asian elephants often wrap their trunk around objects to grasp them.”
Interestingly, the number of wrinkles is not uniform across both sides of an elephant’s trunk, which appears to correlate with its preferred side. While it is known that elephants are born with trunk wrinkles, this research also provides insight into how these wrinkles develop even before birth. The study showed that, in elephant fetuses, the frequency of trunk wrinkles doubles approximately every 20 days from day 80 to day 150 of gestation, with the rate of formation slowing significantly thereafter. “Later wrinkles are added slowly, but at a faster rate in Asian than African elephants,” the research team noted.
Brecht highlighted the remarkable specialization of elephant trunks, noting that the wrinkles are closely mapped to neurons in the brainstem. He remarked, “The trunk is this insane, amazing, grasping organ that is very unusual. [It] has more muscles than any other body structure in mammals. The only thing that compares to it is the hand.”
This intriguing study not only deepens our understanding of elephants but also reveals the complex interplay between anatomy and behavior in these creatures.
