Imagine going about your daily routine, only to find yourself face-to-face with a large black bear popping out of a dumpster. Well, that’s precisely what happened to James Marsh, a school principal from West Virginia, when he came across an unexpected visitor at Zela Elementary in Nicholas County.

Marsh had noticed a bear roaming the school grounds earlier and locked the dumpster to prevent incidents. Little did he know that another bear had already made itself at home inside. The surveillance footage revealed the amusing moment when Marsh unlocked the dumpster, and the lid suddenly opened, revealing the bear. Both principal and bear appeared equally startled, each quickly escaping in opposite directions.
Superintendent Donna Burge-Tetrick commented on the incident, saying, “I think the bear was as scared of the principal as the principal was the bear.” She also pointed out that, despite being locked, the bear could still enter and exit the dumpster. Marsh humorously remarked, “You put trash in a dumpster, but you don’t expect anything to come out!”
Although it may seem natural to run from a bear, the National Park Service advises against it. Instead, people should calmly identify themselves as humans, stand their ground, and slowly wave their arms. Securing food and trash is crucial in avoiding negative encounters with bears. Garbage in bear-populated areas should be stored in containers and dumpsters that bears cannot access.
Now, let’s turn this amusing story into action! To ensure the safety of people and wildlife, take the necessary precautions when in a bear country. Educate yourself and others about proper waste management, and Support local initiatives to protect humans and nature. By spreading awareness and taking preventive measures, we can create a safer environment for everyone.
So, remember to lock your dumpsters and trash cans and share this hilarious encounter with your friends and family. Together, we can make a difference for our communities and wildlife!
