Dog Goes from Burned-Out Gas Station to Sanctuary Life

Vinny, a senior dog discovered in the aftermath of war, has found safety and care after being rescued from a burned-out gas station in Hostomel, Ukraine. Volunteers Anton and Anastasiia Kirichenko from UAnimal Rescue stumbled upon Vinny while feeding stray animals in the area near Kyiv. Hidden away in a small, undamaged corner of the destroyed station, Vinny was the only survivor there.

Vinny’s condition was dire when the volunteers found him. Severely malnourished and suffering from multiple health issues, he needed immediate medical attention. UAnimal Rescue took him back to their sanctuary, where his recovery began. Vinny required extensive treatment, including the removal of infected teeth, ear flushes to treat an inner ear infection, and surgery to remove shrapnel embedded in his skin. Although his recovery has been slow due to his age, Vinny has made significant progress.

The war in Ukraine has displaced millions of people and animals, leaving many pets like Vinny homeless or struggling to survive. According to the Humane Society International, lifesaving aid has been provided to nearly 100,000 pets in Ukraine, including the delivery of tons of pet food and supplies.

Despite his challenges, Vinny has become a permanent resident at the UAnimal Rescue sanctuary. With his advanced age and ongoing health issues, finding him an adoptive home proved difficult. However, Vinny has thrived in the sanctuary, receiving love and care every day. His story has even gained a following on social media, with a viral TikTok video capturing his rescue, viewed by over 1.7 million people.
