A malnourished pit bull named Black Velvet met a tragic end despite the efforts of shelter volunteers at Hillsboro, Ohio’s Highland Humane Society. Discovered tied up in a park, Black Velvet was emaciated, infested with fleas, and unable to walk. The shelter received a call from a compassionate individual who had tried to care for her, but despite their efforts, the dog’s condition worsened.
Black Velvet’s dire state was described in a Facebook post by the Highland Humane Society, where she was depicted as a mere skeleton with skin, covered in clusters of fleas. The infestation was so severe that the parasites were visibly consuming her, causing blood to come off of those who tried to help. The dog’s struggle was not isolated to malnourishment; she also faced the challenges of dehydration and potential worm infestations.
The shelter’s executive director, Richelle Fair, recounted the efforts made to save Black Velvet’s life. Despite providing food and water, the pit bull’s condition continued to deteriorate. A visit to the vet revealed the devastating truth: Black Velvet had passed away. Fair emphasized the severity of the case, noting that the dog’s condition indicated prolonged neglect and multiple litters of puppies in her short life.
Sadly, Black Velvet’s story is not unique. Animal shelters across the United States face a constant influx of surrendered pets, with millions of animals in need of care. The Highland Humane Society and other shelters work tirelessly to address issues such as malnourishment, neglect, and preventable health problems.
