Disgraced Zoologist’s Crocodile Finds a New Home

A pet crocodile that once belonged to disgraced British zoologist Adam Britton has found a new home with Matt Wright, the Outback Wrangler known for his Conservation work. The reptile, named Smaug, was relocated to Wright’s Northern Territory property following Britton’s 2022 arrest on horrifying charges of animal cruelty, bestiality, and possession of child abuse material.

Britton, a 53-year-old crocodile specialist, had once been a respected figure in the wildlife community, even hosting renowned naturalist Sir David Attenborough at his home. However, his reputation crumbled when authorities uncovered his brutal activities, which involved sourcing dogs from online listings and torturing them to death on camera. He was sentenced to ten years in prison in August 2023 after pleading guilty to 63 charges.

Smaug, Britton’s pet crocodile, was taken from the couple’s home near Darwin, Australia, where Britton committed most of his heinous acts. His wife, Erin, also a biologist, was unaware of her husband’s crimes during their marriage. In a recent interview on Channel Nine’s 60 Minutes, she shared her shock and disbelief upon learning the truth, describing Britton as a “psychopath” who had destroyed her life.

Erin revealed that Britton kept the remains of his victims in a freezer on their property, likely feeding them to Smaug to dispose of evidence. Reflecting on her marriage, she questioned how she had failed to notice his actions despite their deteriorating relationship in the years leading up to his arrest. She expressed her anguish, saying, “I cannot comprehend still how somebody can be so depraved, so evil, and how he’s just destroyed my entire life.”

Britton’s arrest has since spurred Erin to advocate for animal welfare, determined to raise awareness and protect animals from such cruelty. Meanwhile, Wright, who is known for his wildlife Conservation efforts, has taken in Smaug, the unfortunate crocodile at the center of this dark and disturbing chapter.
